Artforum International, the seminal magazine of the artworld holds its place as a polarizing publication. Criticized by the Guerilla Girls for its lack of female representation, “ARTFORHIM” is also known just as much for its critical discourse and exhibition reviews as it is by its advertisements. Some are artworks in and of themselves like Lynda Benglis’s infamous double page ad of her nude holding a double headed dildo as part of a conversation with sculptor Robert Morriss was so inflammatory that it caused part of the staff to resign and then start the theory driven, “October”. Artforums ads are often designed specific to the publication with grand photos of the artists or completely unrelated photography like the standing back cover ads of Galerie Bruno Bischofberger that featured photography of Switzerland.
